SHINE DISCOVERY SESSION

26-28 September 2014

This camp aims to make us aware of where we stand in terms of your skills sets and what skills we need to further develop, understand our own learning styles and preferences and learn how to use and manipulate these elements to perform better, and be able to form a sound and wholesome understanding of ourselves by identifying our strengths & areas for improvement.

Made some new friends on the bus. This camp is a good opportunity for me to make new friends beyond my current course.

We stayed for two nights in Ontok-Ontok Chalet, Batang Kali, Selangor.

After the ice-breaking session, I was elected as leader of a team. As a team, we accomplished the Marshmallow challenge.

One of the indoor activities.

These activities were meant to make us discover who we are, how we feel and understand more about ourselves.

The next day, we went jungle-trekking

An outdoor cooking competition was held.

A video of the camp:

During the SHINE Discovery Session, I felt grateful that I met many new people and get to make friends with them. By expanding my networking of people, my horizon gets wider and it will help me throughout my campus life. I joined many camps like this but this is the first time ever I became a team leader. This made me step out of my comfort zone and realize some of my weaknesses such as not being aware enough of people around me and their needs. Next, during the 8-minute marshmallow challenge, I learned skills on coordinating different people with different opinions in a team. I also learned better ways to build a free-standing structure by referring to structures done by other teams, which will assist me as I venture into the architectural industry in the future.

Moreover, during the session where we used Lego to build a tower that represent our thoughts and feelings, I was grateful that I had a chance to apply what I learned in FNBE by implementing architectural handwriting and basic design concepts such as harmonious selection of colours, synchronicity and balance. The jungle trekking and cooking event was memorable for all of us as we endured hardships and accomplished tasks together. On the way back to the dorm, I actually saw a real life turkey in front of me for the first time in my life. It was a valuable experience for a city-dweller like me. Last but not least, I felt enlightened when I listened to Mr Amalen, Mr Chan and Mr Gerald as they spoke about their experiences such as organizing events and volunteering, which gave me a spirit of willing to serve more. Overall, this camp made my weekend well-spent.
