eco campaign 2015 eco ideas proposal competition
first runner-up
19 June 2015
In this varsity-level competition, participants from all schools present their ideas on ways to decreasing carbon-emission, urban heat island effect and other negative impacts on our environment through ways of waste management, innovative technology or any other methods.
Our team's idea is to revolutionize residential housing plans by redirecting waste from housing units to an urban farming zone. Agriculture with close proximity to the living areas produces organic food back to the residents. This decreases the demand of transportation of food from other places and fully utilize waste as fertilizer, thus making residential houses more self-sustainable.

tales of three cities
Ideas and theories in urbanism
In a group, we selected a case study city and scrutinized the city in both historical and contemporary phases. In this case, the city chosen is Georgetown, Penang, famed for its rich colonial past and expanding tourism industry. A digital presentation is prepared on salient and insightful ideas, theories, and social situations that gave rise to the spatial form of the city.
The critical analysis on historical and contextual underpinning answers the city's response to modern and postmodern ideas, place making aspects in the city in the clearly specified categories of built form, activity and movement patterns. From here we acquired a holistic understanding about various historical phases of Georgetown and its response to modernization.

In a nutshell, we learnt about factors taken consideration in urban planning such as urban morphology and its long term consequences on the city. Heritage must not be sacrificed for the excuse of short term profit and intentions and must be preserved for the wellness of humanity.
Sadly, certain unique attributes of Georgetown such as the Koay Jetty were demolished rather than restored as developers valued profit and failed to cherish their significance in society. Discontinuation of vernacular architectural features such as the air well in newer buildings that devoid of local culture caused negative impacts on the complex built environment of this thriving multicultural city.
No point crying over spilt milk. Heritage must be preserved and unaffected by economical needs. Previous mistakes done to Georgetown’s urbanscape have to be fixed before it is too late.
