a personal space

Studies show that unfavourable and derelict dwelling conditions causes negative effects on the psychological well-being of senior citizens. This is an issue to be addressed as the population of old people in the world is rapidly increasing. Therefore, this project explores the idea of a personal space designed for a designated elderly person to cater his or her own distinctiveness, personality and character.

A site visit to an old folks' home, Sisters of The Poor was held. We interviewed Ms Helen Wong, who dedicated her life to sewing and had lived in the house for more than 10 years.

Ms Helen is a cheerful old woman that is willing to interact with others but was discouraged due to the negative, grumpy attitude of other old folks. In response to her condition and hobby, we proposed a space that enables her to sew in solitude within nature which attracts 'people of her kind' to come forth and interact with her. The cheerful colours, fluid form inspired by interweaving lines represents her character best.

She is a right-hander and requires a place to  keep and arrange her sewing equipment and craftwork. Therefore, rollable compartments are placed on her dominant side within arm's reach. Her two children visits regularly and thus, a simple seating for them is designed.
