case study paper: redefining malaysian terrace residential architecture by introducing passive design strategies

By using the same building as the previous project, namely the Rienzi House and adding in a supplementary case study, the Salinger House by Ar Jimmy Lim for its tropical materiality, we identified an issue and further define the scope of study in our paper.

We chose to suggest multiple practical methods on improving local residential houses extracted from both case studies. This is due to the fact that since active ventilation systems are introduced, passive design strategies that are present in our vernacular architectural heritage has been neglected and they should be revived to make our houses more sustainable and eco-friendly.

final paper

There are many factors involved when designing terrace residential houses in tropical places but they tend to be neglected as issues are assumed to be overcome using mechanical means. Buildings last very long and can create huge impacts to society and environment. Thus, they should not be taken lightly.

Malaysian people should be aware of the importance of vernacular and passive design and should not look down or forget about our own traditional architectural heritage. Practical components implemented in traditional houses are to be revived in residential houses instead of mere copying of western housing models which disregards the local context.

This sets a new direction for local architecture to provide Malaysians better, sustainable living conditions and a sense of belonging in the urban environment they dwell in.
