contextual architecture study

In groups of five or six, we are first required to identify a building in Asia and carry out a case study on the selected building through observations, readings and research on the contemporary contextual architecture practices and issues in Asia. This project aims to provide us a better understanding on the fundamental issues of a typical contextual architecture and the led to the growth of vernacular architecture language in a country.

The building we selected to study on is the Rienzi House in Singapore designed by A D LAB as it implements passive design strategies that are applicable in our efforts to propose an ideal plan for local terrace houses.

Many factors must be taken consideration whend refurbishment and renovation efforts are done. These factors include climatic, cultural and coordination aspects. These fundamental elements have been integrated, which improves the design of a residential house nestled amidst a constrained site between two other buildings. The design of Rienzi House is pragmatic as it responds to local tropical climate, fitting the language of vernacular architecture which is sometimes neglected by the local population in the course of rapid modernization and globalization.
